The extension sends nothing to its author, and contains no analytics, telemetry,
tracking, or advertising. It has no server component.
It is not, however, a "collects no data" extension, and does not claim to be. To
do its job it must ask a third-party archive about the profile you are looking
at, which necessarily tells that archive you looked at it. Its Firefox manifest
declares this as browsingActivity — information about the websites users
visit — rather than the none that would otherwise be tempting. The detail is
below.
Two kinds of request are made, both only after you click the arctic shift
tab on a profile page. Nothing is requested before that click.
1. To arctic-shift.photon-reddit.com — the public
Arctic Shift archive.
The request contains the reddit username whose profile you are viewing, and
paging parameters (a timestamp and a result limit). No account of yours is
identified, no credentials are sent, and requests are made withcredentials: 'omit', so no cookies accompany them.
Be clear about what this does disclose: Arctic Shift learns that somebody asked
about that profile, alongside your IP address, as it would for any web request.
It is not told who you are or which reddit account you are signed into, and the
extension sends no identifier that would link separate requests to you. Arctic
Shift is operated by a third party under its own terms; this extension is not
affiliated with it. If you are not comfortable with that disclosure, do not click
the tab — nothing is requested until you do.
2. To reddit.com — reddit's own public listing endpoint
(/user/<name>.json), on the site you are already browsing.
This is needed to tell which archived items reddit is actually hiding, rather
than guessing from what has scrolled into view. It is a same-origin request to
the site you are on, carrying your existing session exactly as normal browsing
does, and goes to nobody but reddit.
Two boolean preferences — whether recovered rows are highlighted, and whether
they auto-load on scroll — kept in your browser's extension storage
(storage.sync). If you have browser sync enabled, your browser may sync them
across your own devices; that is between you and your browser vendor. Nothing
else is stored, and no history of what you viewed or looked up is kept.
The "only hidden" view mode is deliberately not stored.
- No data is sent to the extension's author, who operates no servers.
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or usage measurement of any kind.
- No selling, sharing, or transfer of data to anyone.
- No reading or transmission of your reddit credentials, cookies, or messages.
- No activity on any site other than
reddit.comandold.reddit.com— the
extension's content script does not run anywhere else.
The extension displays reddit posts and comments that were public when posted and
are held in a public third-party archive. It does not access private messages,
deleted accounts' credentials, or any content requiring authentication beyond the
session you are already browsing with.
