What this extension does
Dark Pattern Detector analyzes webpage content to identify manipulative UI design patterns (such as fake urgency, bait-and-switch, confirm-shaming, hidden costs, and forced continuity).
What data is collected
When you browse a webpage with this extension enabled, it observes changes to the page's visible content (DOM mutations) and sends a summary of those changes to our analysis server for classification. This includes:
- The type of page change (e.g., new content appearing, attribute changes)
- The visible text associated with the change (limited to 200 characters per element)
- The HTML tag name of the changed element
What data is NOT collected
- No personally identifying information (names, emails, passwords)
- No browsing history or URLs
- No cookies, session tokens, or authentication data
- No financial or payment information
- No search terms or bookmarks
How data is processed
Page content is sent to a server hosted on Hugging Face Spaces (https://Allens1242-DarkPatterns.hf.space) where it is analyzed using a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline and a large language model. The data is processed in real time and is not stored, logged, or retained after the analysis is complete.
Third-party services
- Hugging Face Spaces: Hosts the analysis backend. Subject to Hugging Face's privacy policy (https://huggingface.co/privacy).
- Hugging Face Inference Providers: Provides the language model used for classification. No user data is retained by the inference provider beyond request processing.
Data sharing
We do not sell, share, or transfer any user data to third parties for advertising, marketing, or any purpose other than dark pattern detection as described above.
