BetterFeed — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-06-13
BetterFeed replaces YouTube's algorithmic home page with a static, scheduled feed. This policy describes exactly what the extension stores, where it goes, and what it does not do. The source code is open (GPLv3), so every claim here can be verified.
WHAT IT STORES ON YOUR DEVICE
Stored locally in your browser: your settings and cleanup toggles; the current week's video grid and its metadata; the videos and channels you've hidden; the videos you've watched this week and your playback position in them; your daily watch counters; a random local device identifier (used only to keep each device's watch-time in its own bucket — it is not linked to your identity, hardware, or account); any active "5 more minutes / finish video" grace; and your current Work session state.
WHAT SYNCS ACROSS YOUR DEVICES
If you have browser sync enabled, a subset is mirrored through your own browser account: your settings, the weekly grid as bare video IDs only, hidden video/channel lists, the week's watched videos, per-video playback position, the next-refresh time, and your daily watch counters (so the daily limit can't be bypassed by switching devices). This goes through your own browser-vendor account — the BetterFeed project never sees it.
NETWORK REQUESTS
BetterFeed contacts YouTube and nothing else. It reads YouTube's home page in the background when a refresh is due, and fetches public YouTube pages (oEmbed, watch pages, channel pages) and thumbnail images to fill in titles, view counts, durations, and avatars. These are the same hosts your browser already talks to when you use YouTube. No data is sent to any BetterFeed server, because there is no BetterFeed server.
WHAT BETTERFEED DOES NOT DO
No analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting. No third-party services, ad networks, or external SDKs. It does not collect your name, email, IP address, location, payment data, or contacts. It does not read your YouTube account, subscriptions, or watch history. There is no data to sell or share, and no business relationship through which to do so.
CLEARING YOUR DATA
Open the extension's options page and add #debug to the URL to reveal the Debug tab. "Clear local data" wipes everything stored on this device; "Clear sync data" wipes the synced subset across your devices. Uninstalling removes all local data. You can also remove individual hidden items from the popup or the Hidden videos settings page.
