About this extension
The Kainos HL7 Editor Companion detects and captures HL7 v2 messages on any webpage and optionally pairs with the Kainos HL7 Editor desktop app for full parsing, editing, field-level validation, and transformation — entirely on your device.
Two modes — no desktop app required to get started:
KEY FEATURES
• Automatic, on-device HL7 v2 detection that stays out of your way — a lightweight check runs only when you focus or paste into a text field, never as a background page scan. Detection works on any site by default; from Options you can limit it to specific sites or block individual sites.
• One-click "Edit with HL7 Editor" button opens the message in the full editor for validation, transformation, and field-level editing.
• Send your edits back to the page with one click.
• Customize the on-page button: standard or compact icon-only size, manual or automatic site-matching color with built-in contrast checking.
• Works offline via the system clipboard when the desktop app isn't already open.
• Standalone mode: Click the popup, hit "Capture from clipboard," and the extension extracts HL7 messages from your clipboard instantly. Copy, inspect, and share message text — all without the desktop app.
• Paired mode (optional): When the Kainos HL7 Editor desktop app is running, the extension connects via a secure WebSocket bridge at ws://localhost only. Captured messages open directly in the full editor for segment-level parsing, field editing, and export. Get Kainos HL7 Editor at kainoshealthcare.com/products.
Privacy-first design for healthcare:
HL7 v2 messages frequently contain Protected Health Information (PHI). This extension is designed with PHI safety as a first principle:
• All processing is local — no data leaves your machine
• The WebSocket bridge connects exclusively to 127.0.0.1 / localhost — no external servers
• No accounts, no telemetry, no cloud storage
• Clipboard access activates only on explicit user action
Who it's for:
Clinical informaticists, interface engineers, lab IT teams, and HL7 integration developers who review or debug HL7 feeds in browser-based consoles, web EMRs, or integration monitoring tools.
