SocialKit for W — Firefox Privacy Policy

SocialKit for W is an independent Firefox extension created by Christopher McCabe to enhance and organise the W Social browser experience.

SocialKit is designed to be privacy-conscious and local-first. It does not ask for your W password, access private messages, include advertising, sell user data, or operate a SocialKit analytics or tracking server.

SocialKit for W is independent of and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by W Social AB.

Information SocialKit can process

Depending on the features you choose to use, SocialKit may process public information available through W Social and the AT Protocol, including:

Public profile handles and usernames
Display names
Public profile descriptions
Public posts
Public profile information
Public following/follower and graph information
Public interaction information
Public search terms entered into SocialKit
AT Protocol DIDs
Public DID documents
Public PDS information
Public PLC lifecycle/history information
Explicitly declared public country information

SocialKit can also process information that you create inside the extension, including:

Circles
Circle membership
Member priorities or tiers
Relationship notes and tags
Follow-up state
Watch entries
Saved-post snapshots
Settings
Privacy preferences
Diagnostics

This user-created workspace information is stored locally in Firefox extension storage.

Local storage

SocialKit stores its private workspace and settings using Firefox extension local storage on your browser profile.

SocialKit does not use Firefox Sync for this information.

Your Circles, private notes, tags, saved-post library, Watch state and settings are not uploaded to a SocialKit or Christopher McCabe server.

You can export or delete your local SocialKit data from the extension's Settings page.

Public AT Protocol requests

Some SocialKit features require current public AT Protocol information.

After you give consent and use one of these features, SocialKit may send the minimum information required for that request directly from your browser to:

public.api.bsky.app

This public AT Protocol service is used for functions including public profile information, posts, search, graph information and handle resolution.

plc.directory

This public AT Protocol service is used for public did:plc identity documents and PLC lifecycle/history information.

Information transmitted may include a public:

Handle
DID
Post reference
Search term

SocialKit does not proxy these requests through a SocialKit analytics server.

Firefox data permissions

Firefox requires extensions to declare categories of information that may be transmitted outside the extension.

SocialKit declares optional categories covering:

Personally identifying public information, such as public handles and DIDs
Public website/post content
Search terms entered into SocialKit
Public country/location declarations where the optional Country Badge feature is enabled
Public social communication/content required for supported SocialKit features

These permissions relate to the user-invoked public-data functionality described in this policy.

They do not give SocialKit access to your W password, private messages, email account or unrelated browsing activity.

Mozilla requires new extensions submitted to AMO to declare relevant data-collection and transmission categories in browser_specific_settings.gecko.data_collection_permissions.

Consent

Public-data features remain paused until you give permission through SocialKit's Privacy & Data notice and any relevant Firefox permission request.

You may revoke your consent from SocialKit Settings.

When public-data consent is revoked:

Public-data features are paused
Country Badges are disabled
Relevant temporary caches are cleared

Firefox also allows users to manage extension permissions through the Firefox Add-ons Manager.

AT Protocol Identity

SocialKit's Identity feature can display factual public AT Protocol information such as:

Handle → DID resolution
DID method
Declared PDS
Handle/DID consistency
Public PLC lifecycle information

Identity does not produce or assign:

Trust scores
Reputation scores
Safety scores
Political classifications
Personality classifications
Credit scores
Quality scores
Influence scores

The information shown is factual protocol information and should not be interpreted as a judgement about a person.

Translation and language detection

The Firefox edition of SocialKit can use Firefox's local language-detection functionality.

SocialKit does not send the text of W posts to Christopher McCabe, a SocialKit translation server or an external translation provider.

Where translation is required, Firefox's own browser translation functionality may be used.

Country Badges

Country Badges are disabled by default.

If you explicitly enable them, SocialKit recognises only clear public declarations such as:

Country: Ireland
From Ireland
Born in Ireland
[country: IE]

SocialKit does not determine nationality or country from:

A person's name
Writing language
IP address
Device location
A single flag emoji
Passport information
Hidden account information
W Identity information

Country Badge lookups use short-lived memory-only caching.

Notifications

SocialKit uses Firefox's alarms permission for scheduling functionality.

If you explicitly enable Priority notifications, SocialKit may request Firefox's optional notifications permission.

Notifications remain optional and can be disabled.

Information SocialKit does not collect

SocialKit does not collect or access:

W passwords
Authentication credentials
Private messages
Emails
Financial information
Payment information
Health information
Passport information
Exact device location
Unrelated browser history

SocialKit does not include an advertising SDK.

SocialKit does not operate a behavioural analytics or tracking backend.

SocialKit does not sell user data.

Remote code

SocialKit does not download or execute remote JavaScript.

All executable extension code is packaged with the Firefox add-on.

Public APIs return data rather than executable extension code.

Advertising and profiling

SocialKit does not use information for:

Advertising
Behavioural advertising
Data brokerage
Creditworthiness decisions
Lending decisions
Employment decisions
Insurance decisions
Unrelated profiling

Information handled by SocialKit is used only to provide the extension's disclosed functionality.

Security

SocialKit uses:

Manifest V3
HTTPS public endpoints
Restricted W Social page access
Local extension storage
A restrictive extension Content Security Policy
Limited external service access

No software can guarantee absolute security, but SocialKit is designed to minimise access and avoid unnecessary transmission of information.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when SocialKit changes materially.

Material changes to data handling will be reflected in the extension, the Firefox Add-ons listing and this privacy policy as appropriate.
