HOW IT WORKS

1. See the footprint — wherever you are
   Click the CarbonGuru button — or select text — on any website. Prefer another surface? Paste product information, analyze URLs, or upload documents from the CarbonGuru console; generate footprints by email; or connect your AI agent — Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP-compatible agent — for customized, automated analysis.
2. Understand the impact
   AI identifies what you bought, then Environmentally-Extended Input-Output (EIO) analysis calculates the footprint across the full lifecycle — raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and delivery. Every estimate is the cumulative footprint up to the point the item is in your hands, reported in kg CO₂e — the internationally recognized measure — alongside a real-world climate-impact cost in dollars and relatable comparisons that make the number meaningful without expertise. Works everywhere, in nearly 120 languages, with detailed economic and environmental models for over 140 countries.
3. Act right where you are — in one step
   Every result comes with vetted offsets and removals you can fund immediately — the credit is purchased and retired for you automatically. Offset one product, a full cart, or a month of purchases; quantities scale from a single item under 1 kg CO₂e to bulk per-tonne actions. Offsetting costs pennies per kilogram — usually a few percent of what you paid — and for a little more you can go net-positive by funding removals.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

Carbon footprint calculations use EIO (Environmentally-Extended Input-Output) analysis. EIO models the entire economy as a web of industries — each one buying from others — and traces emissions through every link in the chain. This gives you a credible, full lifecycle footprint estimate even without access to factory data or supplier lists.

Climate impact calculations use the Social Cost of Carbon (SC-CO₂), the same metric used by governments and international bodies to evaluate the economic damage caused by each additional ton of CO₂. The result is a single dollar figure that represents the real long-term harm of your carbon footprint — making the invisible consequences of emissions concrete and comparable.

AI handles the messy part: reading product titles, receipt text, and web pages to figure out exactly what you bought and map it to the right category. The science handles the rest. AI provides speed and clarity; established environmental and economic models provide accuracy and consistency.

VERIFIED, TRACEABLE ACTION

Carbon offsets prevent or reduce emissions elsewhere — nature-based (avoided deforestation, reforestation, regenerative agriculture), community (clean cookstoves, renewable energy), and industrial avoidance (methane capture, landfill gas). Carbon removals actively draw CO₂ back out of the atmosphere — biochar sequestration, enhanced rock weathering, direct air capture, and ocean-based CDR.

Credits are sourced through CNaught, Frontier, and Stripe Climate — working with leading registries including Gold Standard, Verra (VCS), Puro.earth, and Isometric, with independent third-party auditing, transparent monitoring, and rigorous additionality testing. Every credit is traceable to a specific project and place, and every purchase includes a certificate with project details, registry links, and retirement records.

WHAT WE COLLECT

The extension only sends data when you ask it to analyze something — clicking the CarbonGuru button or analyzing a text selection. It does not passively monitor your browsing. Depending on what you choose to analyze, CarbonGuru may receive the page content and URL of the product, cart, receipt, email, document, or text you provide, plus your account email.
