DeepL: AI translator and writing assistant by DeepL

by Cy "kkm" K'Nelson, 2 years agoThe extension functionality is A-OK, solid 5/5. It's the implementation that kills it usefulness, and barely scrapes 0/5. I could go into the negative score numbers, but boy, where I would've stopped then...
I had to uninstall the extension because it throws its trash around all over the browser. It injects a humongous CSS stylesheet, 115KB(!) in size, into *every single open tab*, regardless of DeepL translation being ever used. I estimated that I used the selection translation pop-up at about one in every 500 to 1000 pages. This is a truly humongous waste of resources. The stylesheet contains 734 selectors, 2999 property settings and two @media width breakpoints. You'd have a hard time convincing me that this is a bare minimum necessary to display a simple pop-up box…
And then, in any case, a sensibly written extension would have delayed loading its CSS until it is actually needed, i.e. until it actually displays something. And load it into a sandbox, so that it's gone when the pop-up is closed: come think of it, DOM shadow roots were invented for a reason, and scoping resources in time was one of the two major ones. Now, the funny part, albeit not ha-ha funny: the extension does in fact use a shadow root for the pop-up, and… yes, you guessed it, loads another copy of its juggernaut CSS sheet into it. Why it also stuffs all this useless CSS everywhere it only can is beyond me, but loading the CPU with the browser's failing to match the extra 750 selectors every time the layout is recomputed—and "responsive" layouts on dynamically changing pages have to be deeply recomputed often!—isn't something I can use. I have better ways to waste my CPU than this extension.
As soon as the issue is fixed, I'm upgrading my rating to 5/5 not thinking twice. I hope that this is just an oversight, a bad design decision that could be soon reassessed and undone.

- Rated 5 out of 5by kuro, 11 days agoI am glad that such a high-quality plugin has appeared; it greatly speeds up work by translating posts on social networks, blogs, and forums. The ability to open the add-on in the sidebar also speeds up my work considerably. I don't even know what else could be improved here. This is my first time writing a review, as the developers have done a very good job with the UI/UX. I would like to see long-term support and for the add-on to be available in all browsers.

- Rated 3 out of 5by Sam, a month agoit works, convenient to read by highlighting the text, but inconvenient to open laterally by clicking on the extension for manual translations.

- Rated 3 out of 5by Hpomen, a month agoAdding the "DeepL" add-on to the Firefox sidebar uyuki deficiencies: 1) "select all - copy - paste - clear" switching keys are missing 2) "OK" button translation language selection, double-clicking to change translations is not possible 3) Dark mode selection is not available... IMPORTANT DEFICIENCIES ... Please add these as they would be perfect. Thank you.
- Rated 5 out of 5by db, 2 months agoThe best translator I've ever used. There are many, of course, and surely one will not meet the needs of every person and every situation. But for a language-learner like me, immersed in a new culture, trying to improve (and sometimes just get by), it's perfect: fast, accurate, reliable.

- Rated 5 out of 5by Adrian, 2 months agoEs una aplicación (web) bastante precisa en sus traducciones respecto a la competencia, muy recomendada
- Rated 1 out of 5by Noober, 2 months agoNo full web-page translation.

Plus, enjoy more features in the web translator and apps:

And no, it will not start working 15 days after I posted this comment :-( - Rated 2 out of 5by stratosgear, 2 months agoVery limited on what it can do without a paid account, intrusive ui elements. Not worth keeping... :(

The extention does often not work, nothing happens when you right click, also does the popup not always appear.
