Kaomoji (顔文字, “face mark”) are what are called Japanese emoticons, which are more detailed and more expressive than western emoticons. They’re quite popular in Japan, and they’re getting more and more popular overseas. They are composed of a lot of different characters mostly unused in regular speech to create more detailed expressions, which is what makes them more expressive than western emoticons.
