What's new since 0.5.63
- Export a document: two rows in the reader's menu over a saved article or book, Export as EPUB (the text with the downloaded pictures, for e-book readers and reading apps) and Export as Markdown (.md) (the text with headings and links, for notes and other apps). In selection mode on the reading list, the same two exports write one file per selected document.
- Import of Markdown texts: the Import button on the reading list accepts .md files. The text is added as a book, divided into parts, with a table of contents from its headings; footnotes open in a bubble. A file exported from the reader as Markdown can be imported back.
- Pictures under the title: a saved article that has pictures shows a line under its title with their number and the button Download and show in the text. It is the same action as Download pictures in the menu. While the pictures are being downloaded, the line shows the progress and a Stop button; after the download, the line disappears.

What's new since 0.5.62
- Reading speed is a setting: a field on the settings page, in words a minute (50 to 600, 200 by default). The reading time on the reading list and under an article's title is calculated from this number.
- The speed of reading aloud on the settings page is named Voice speed.

- Learned moves the phrase to the Learned list on the saved phrases page, with its meanings, sentence and counts, and removes its underlines. On that list, Back to learning returns the phrase to the To learn list; Delete removes a phrase for good after a second press, and a button under the list deletes all learned phrases. Learned phrases are not written to the .tsv files, and importing a file does not change which phrases are learned. The backup of everything includes the Learned list.
- Four new rows in the reader's Aa panel: Line spacing (Tight, Normal, Loose), Alignment (Left, Justified), Hyphenation (Off, On) and Paragraphs (Spaced, Indented, Both). Hyphenation uses the browser's own rules for the language the page or book declares; nothing is downloaded for it.
- The reading list shows the length of each text: the number of words and about how many minutes it takes at 200 words a minute; for a book, the whole book in hours. The line under an article's title shows the same, together with the number of your saved phrases found in that text. For texts saved earlier, the numbers appear a moment after the list is opened.
- The speaker button in the reader's bar starts reading aloud and, pressed again, stops it. Pause and resume are on the bar at the bottom and on the space bar.
- A darker background marks the selected option in the Aa panel, the open tab on the reading list and on the saved phrases page, and a pressed button above the article; the difference is visible on e-ink.
- Custom CSS: new names .reader-facts (#facts), .phrase-segments, .learned-actions, #delete-learned, .quiet-unlearn, .quiet-delete-all, and the attributes data-reader-line-height, data-reader-align, data-reader-hyphens and data-reader-paragraphs on the root element.

What's new since 0.5.60
- A pressed bar button (the highlighter, reading aloud, an open panel) has a darker background only, with the same frame as the other buttons. The full-screen button has no darker background in full screen; its icon changes instead.

What's new since 0.5.59
- Books can be included in the backup: tick "Export with books (N books · X MB)" under the pictures box on the reading list. The file then holds each book's text and pictures together with its reading position. On import, books that are not in the list are added, with their highlights and positions. Without the box, books are not in the file; keep their .epub files.
- In Select mode, books can be ticked like articles. "Export selected" writes reread-selection.zip: the ticked articles and books with their highlights and positions, the books' pictures, and an article's pictures when the pictures box is ticked - without the saved phrases and the settings.
- The "Import and export" section lists what the backup contains; the .zip, .epub and .md files are described in the "File format" fold. The import report includes the titles of the books whose highlights are in the file but which are not in the list yet. Picture counts are shown with their size, for example "35 pictures · 4.1 MB".
- The bar at the top of the reading list, the highlights, the saved phrases and the settings is visible also after the page is scrolled. Links to sections and rows reached with Tab are placed under the bar.
- Full screen: a button in the bar of every page, on a computer as well; in full screen the bar is still visible.
- A pressed bar button (the highlighter, reading aloud, an open panel, full screen) has a thicker frame and a darker background, visible on e-ink as well.
- Saved phrases on a phone: when a phrase is edited, the field, the hint and the Save and Cancel buttons are under the phrase, and the sentence under them.
- Export with pictures needs less memory: the pictures are written into the file one article at a time.
- Highlights imported into a book that is already in the list are placed where their words are, also in another part of the book than the one they were made in (for example after the book was imported again from its .epub file). A highlight whose words are not found exactly once in the book is kept on the Highlights page, and the number of such highlights is given in the import report.
- Custom CSS: new names .transfer-notes, #library-export-books, .page-chrome, .page-bar, .page-tools, #fullscreen (on the saved phrases and settings pages) and the variables --header-air, --bar-h, --header-h; removed .library-row-still and --chrome-hold.

What's new since 0.5.58
- With "Save the sentence with the phrase" turned on in the settings, a phrase that was saved without a sentence - before the setting was on, from the Add a phrase field, or from a two-column file - takes the sentence it stands in the next time you press its underline or select it on a page. The sentence is shown under the phrase on the saved phrases page and goes into the export for Anki, as with a phrase saved with one. A phrase that already has a sentence keeps it; with the setting off nothing is added.

What's new since 0.5.57
- The sentence saved with a phrase is whole on pages and books whose text is wrapped in the file (for example books from Project Gutenberg): a line break inside a paragraph, shown by the browser as a space, was taken for the end of the sentence, so the saved sentence could stop where a line of the file ended. The same line breaks shortened the sentence given to the translation and put a pause into reading aloud; both are corrected as well. Phrases saved earlier keep the sentence they were saved with; to get the whole sentence, mark the phrase as learned and save it again from the text.

What's new since 0.5.56
- In the bubble over a selection, one dictionary is unfolded at a time: unfolding a second dictionary folds the first, and the unfolded entries are brought into view. Until now the second dictionary unfolded below the visible part of the list, and the only visible change was a scrollbar.
- Toolbar popup: a dictionary unfolded under "Look up a word" is brought into view the same way; there the dictionaries still unfold independently of each other.

What's new since 0.5.55
- Two counts are kept with each saved phrase: how many times its bubble was opened (a press on an underline, or a new selection of a phrase already saved), and how many times it occurred in the texts you finished in the reader (a part of a book left through "Next" under its text, an article marked as read). On the saved-phrases page they are shown beside the phrase as a magnifier and a book with a number, with a legend over the list; the list can be ordered by either count, and alphabetically.
- The sentence a phrase was saved in can be kept with it: a new setting, "Save the sentence with the phrase", off until you turn it on. The sentence is shown under the phrase on the saved-phrases page, folded to one line, and written into a third column by "Export for Anki". A phrase keeps the first sentence it was saved from.
- The saved-phrases page has a more compact layout: on a desktop a phrase with a one-line meaning takes one line, on a phone two; the sentence stands under the meaning on both; the actions stand on the phrase's line. On a phone the filter and the order select stand one under the other. Custom CSS: new names .phrase-head, .phrase-body, .phrase-count, .phrase-count-icon, .phrase-legend and .icon-sprite; no name was removed.
- The file "Export for Anki" writes can be imported back: its third column is the sentence. A phrase already saved keeps its meanings and takes the file's sentence only when it has none.
- One backup of everything: "Export" on the reading list now writes reread-backup.zip with the reading list (highlights, reading positions and, if you tick the box, pictures), every saved phrase of every language pair with its sentence and counts, every document's highlights - books' too - and the settings. "Import" reads that file back part by part, adding what is missing and never overwriting what is already there; the settings are restored only when you tick the box. The older files (the list's .json or .zip, the highlights' .json) still import. The Highlights page's own .json export and import are removed; its Markdown notes export stays. "Select" still exports the chosen articles as the list's own file.
- A new setting, "Underline other forms of saved words", off until you turn it on: save "read", and "reads" and "reading" are underlined too, with the bubble over them showing what you saved for "read". Which forms count is decided by your dictionary for the language you read, so one has to be installed.
- Toolbar popup: the answer under "Look up a word" shows every line of a dictionary entry; the box scrolls, so there is no "Show all" fold there.
- Dictionary entries: every HTML entity a dictionary writes (for example [ for a bracket) is decoded, in entries imported earlier as well.
- Settings: the menu leads to the saved phrases also with "Use without a translation model" on.

What's new since 0.5.54
- Look up a word: a field in the toolbar popup and an "Add a phrase" fold on the saved-phrases page. Type a word or a short phrase and the dictionaries installed for the pair's language are searched - the translation model is never asked. On the phrases page a tick on a line saves it as a meaning of the phrase, and a field under "Your own" takes a meaning of your own; the popup only shows the entries, and its button opens the phrases page with the word already looked up. Entries are laid out with their parts of speech as labels, pronunciations and cross-references under "More about the word", and long entries fold behind "Show all". Dictionaries added before this version keep their entries as they were read at the time; to get paragraphs and notes in older entries laid out the new way, remove the dictionary and add it again.
- The bubble over a selection shows the same shelf of dictionaries: a book per fold with the count of its meanings and a checkbox per line. A tick saves the meaning at once, unticking the last one forgets the phrase, and the bubble keeps its height while a book is unfolded. For custom CSS: the bubble's .entry, .entry-label, .entry-dict and .entry-sense classes and the --pad-sense variable are gone; the shelf's .lookup-* names now stand in the bubble as they do on the pages.
- Dictionaries in the settings: each stored dictionary can be given a display name of up to 40 characters, under "Details" on its row; that name heads the dictionary's entries in the bubble, the popup and the phrases page. The list itself is rebuilt: every row is a stack - the pair and its buttons, the name, the counts and the size, "Details" - the same on a phone and on a desktop; "Show all" and "Show fewer" are placed at the rows' left edge, and the filter narrows the list without unfolding it. Every checkbox in the extension now ticks in the text's colour.
- The toolbar popup: "Open in reading view" fits one line in every language; over a page the extension cannot run in (the browser's own pages, the store) that row is greyed out instead of opening an empty reader; the note "Machine translation is off" under the language pair is gone - the ticked switch below is the only sign of it; and the dictionary entries under the look-up field are spaced closer together.
- Several meanings of your own at once: a semicolon separates them, in the field under "Your own" and in the edit box of a phrase, in the bubble and on the phrases page, with a note under the edit box. A dictionary's own line with a semicolon in it stays one meaning until you edit that line. Meanings saved earlier with a semicolon typed in are split once, on the first start after this update, into separate meanings; dictionary lines with semicolons are left as they are, and a copy of the phrases as they were is kept in the extension's storage for thirty days.

What's new since 0.5.52
- Translation with the network off works again after a pause. On Firefox - on Android and on desktop - switching the network off (airplane mode, Wi-Fi off) and then leaving re/read alone for half a minute made the next selection show "Something went wrong inside the extension", every time, until the browser was restarted. Firefox refuses a request made from the translation engine's worker thread while the network is down, even for a file inside the extension itself, and the engine's file was loaded that way at every start of the engine. The file is now read by the extension itself and handed to the engine, so the state of the network no longer matters.

What's new since 0.5.49
- A page in your own language no longer gets nonsense from the translation model. Before the model is asked, the extension checks which language the selected text is in - with the browser's built-in language detector (Compact Language Detector, compiled into Firefox and Chromium; it runs on the device and sends nothing anywhere) and with your dictionaries. When the sentence around the selection is in the pair's target language, or a dictionary of another language knows the word while the pair's do not, the model is not asked at all: the bubble shows that language's dictionary entries instead, or says that no such dictionary is installed yet, reads the word aloud in that language and saves nothing on its own. The line under such a word now reads "Will be saved under the active language pair: ...".
- Under the translation of a word or two with no dictionary entry, the bubble says that a translation model often gets a word on its own wrong, and which dictionary would have known better: no dictionary for the language installed yet (the word "settings" in that line opens the settings at the Dictionaries section), or the installed ones do not know the word - with a link to the list of dictionary sources. The settings highlight the sentences about single words and say where the dictionary list comes from and that your own dictionaries can be added from files or from a link.
- The toolbar popup's rows no longer move under the cursor: the site switch stands from the first paint and is filled in when the page answers, instead of appearing a moment later and pushing the rows below down.
- On Android, where the reader's bar has room for it, a full-screen button next to the menu gives the article the whole screen and folds the reader's bar away behind its ribbon in one press; the ribbon brings the bar back, and the same button or Back leaves full screen.

What's new since 0.5.48
- With the translation model off, a selected word is now looked up in your dictionaries for the language pair first, and in the language the page declares only when those dictionaries do not know the word. Sites shown in another language (Mastodon with a Polish interface, for example) declare the language of their menus, not of their posts, so an English word on such a site was looked up in Polish. A Polish word on a Polish page still finds your Polish dictionaries. The "No dictionary for ... yet" line names the pair's language, "Will be saved under ..." shows only when a dictionary of another language knew the word, and the speaker reads a word in the language of the dictionary that knew it; a longer selection is read in the pair's language.
- With the translation model off, the bubble now says "Looking it up..." while the dictionaries are being asked, the way it says "Translating..." with a model.

What's new since 0.5.47
- Switched-off sites can be added by hand: in the settings, under "Switched-off sites", type a site's address (or paste a page's whole address) and press Add. The section also says when the popup shows no switch: with "Use without a translation model" and "No bubble when selecting text" both on, nothing happens on ordinary pages, so there is nothing to switch off. www.example.org and example.org now count as one site; a subdomain such as news.example.org stays a separate site.
- The re/read entry in the right-click menu is now created on every browser start as well, not only at install, so it is there after an update made by replacing the extension's files.

What's new since 0.5.46
- A dictionary can be added from a link: in the settings, under "Add a dictionary from a link", paste the address of a StarDict dictionary packed as a .zip file, choose the languages and press Download. The extension fetches the archive, unpacks it and adds the dictionary with the same checks as for files you pick yourself - nothing to unpack, no files to choose. It connects to that address once, when you press the button, sends nothing of yours along and accepts only https addresses. Sources of free dictionaries, monolingual ones included, are listed at reapps.eu/read.
- Two more ways into the reader on a computer, for whoever never pinned the toolbar button: the right-click menu on any web page has a re/read entry with "Read this page in the reader" and "Offline reading list", and the bubble over a selected word or phrase has a third icon after the speaker and the copy icon - a page - that opens the page in the reader. The right-click entry needs a new permission, contextMenus, which the browser grants without asking; it adds the two rows and reads nothing from the page.

What's new since 0.5.45
- The bubble over a selected word or phrase shows the translated sentence and the dictionary entries right away; until now they were shown only after a press on "More". Nothing extra is downloaded or computed: both were already prepared together with the translation. The "More" button is now labelled "Less" and hides them, and a new setting, "Show the sentence and dictionary entries right away", restores the short bubble. The setting is on for everyone, existing installations included, because a translation model often translates a single word wrongly and the dictionary definitions were shown only after an extra press. The bubble over an already saved phrase is unchanged.
- The settings page now has a note on the weakness of a translation model: the "Translation models" section states that a single word on its own is often translated wrongly - the result is cut short, or is a word that does not exist - and that for single words the dictionaries in the section below are the better source.

What's new since 0.5.43
- Delete is where the article is: an article in the offline reading list offers "Delete" in its own view whether it was opened from the list or straight from a page. Before, a page saved by default showed an "In the reading list" pill instead, and few people found the way to delete under it. Delete asks "Sure?" on a second press everywhere, and stands under the article's last line too, beside "Mark as read", so finishing an article is one decision: keep it as read, or let it go. After Delete the reader always returns to the list.
- Fixed: a page deleted from the reading list and then opened in the reader again by hand is saved by default again, as the setting promises. Only a reload of the reader tab keeps the earlier no.
- Fixed: the "Download pictures" row stayed in the reader's menu after leaving an article. Over the offline reading list and the highlights page the menu went on offering the last article's pictures, count and all. The row now leaves the screen with its article and comes back with the next one, in that one's own state.

What's new since 0.5.39
- A book keeps the pictures of its EPUB file: they are read from the file as the book is added and shown in the text; nothing is downloaded from the network. The reading list says how many pictures a book has and how much space they take, and the menu over the book has a "Remove pictures" row, which deletes the pictures and keeps the book.
- A highlight can get shorter: the pins at the ends of the active highlight are handles - drag either one to make the highlight shorter or longer, word by word, across paragraphs too. On a phone the highlight's toolbar buttons are the size of the header's, so they fit in one row at a larger font size.
- Two buttons in the reader-only bubble: on a page where only the reader is on, the bubble under a selected phrase shows "Read in the reader", filled, and "Open the offline reading list", outlined; the second used to be a plain label. Esc closes the bubble; on a touch screen it opens below the phrase, clear of the system's copy bar.
- Fixed: "There was no article to find on that page" on pages the browser's own reader view could show (every goodereader.com article, for one). Their HTML nests a <noscript> block inside another and the article was lost on its way to the reader; the reader now gets the page exactly as the browser has it.

What's new since 0.5.37
- Full screen from the reader's menu: a "Full screen" row asks the browser for the whole screen. Firefox for Android hides its address bar and Android its status bar; a desktop browser hides its toolbars. Back (Android) or Esc brings them back, and so does the row, which reads "Exit full screen" meanwhile. Made for e-readers, where pages are turned with keys and Firefox's own "Scroll to hide toolbar" never fires, because it reacts only to a finger scrolling. The browser accepts the request only from a press, so after the reader's tab is reloaded the row has to be pressed again.

What's new since 0.5.36
- Custom CSS: a field at the end of the settings page takes CSS rules of your own for the translation bubble, the reader page and the toolbar popup - never for the pages you read, and never for the settings page itself, so a wrong rule can always be undone there (clear the field, save). Rules that would load anything from the network (url(), @import, @font-face) are refused before they are stored. The element names come from the extension's own stylesheets, which the settings page links to at the installed version; they are kept from release to release where possible, and a change is announced in these notes.
- A line stands between one dictionary's entry and the next in the bubble, with about a line of space around it, growing with the bubble text size.
- With dictionaries only and no meaning chosen yet, pressing Save says "Press a meaning to save it" in the bubble instead of doing nothing.
- The bubble holds its side once you press something in it: a bubble above the phrase stays above it and grows upward, instead of flipping below the phrase and scrolling the page.
- Every error message on the extension's pages stands in a frame with a coloured bar, so it is not read as plain text.

What's new since 0.5.35
- The reader's controls - the buttons around a book's parts, the note about a book's language, the Highlights page's own controls, the dialogs' headers - now use the interface font at the interface size; the Aa panel's typeface and size dress the texts alone. On a phone the book's pager fits on one line: the pagers have chevrons, and on a narrow screen the words step aside.
- The reading list searches on a press: type the words, then press Search, Enter or the phone keyboard's search key - over titles and sites, or with "Search in the texts too" ticked, over the stored texts as well. The box changes the scope of the results on screen, an emptied field brings the whole list back, and the Search button lights up while the field holds words the list was not narrowed by.
- Private tabs: the safety copies of the reading list and the highlights are read but never written in a private tab; the pages say so at the top.
- Hardening after a review of the extension's own promises: downloads go without cookies and refuse a response from another host after a redirect, a downloaded archive cannot inflate past a fixed size, events made by a page's own scripts no longer count as your clicks, and saved article addresses are limited to http, https and file. The privacy policy was updated on 2 September 2026.

What's new since 0.5.33
- On a Mac, Option+ArrowDown / Option+ArrowUp turns the reader's page - the platform's own paging chord, and the only one on compact keyboards without page keys. Every turn opens on a whole first line just under the reader's bar, exactly like PgDn/PgUp; before this version the chord fell through to the browser's own scroll, which cut the top line in half and hid text behind the bar.
- The README now lists the keyboard shortcuts.

What's new since 0.5.30
- Highlights have a backup of their own: the Highlights page exports them as a .json file and imports such a file. The highlights are added to the same articles, and to a book imported again from the same .epub file, so a book can be deleted and imported again without losing its highlights. Nothing already there is changed or removed. The Markdown export stays, for reading and notes.
- A highlight whose text has moved (a paragraph added above it, a book imported again) is found by its quote and shown where the text now stands.
- Books imported from EPUB: footnotes open in a small card next to the reference. A book imported before this version needs to be imported again for that - export its highlights first, then import them back.
- Reading without a translation model: the dictionaries and the saved phrases now work on ordinary pages too. The bubble says when a word is not in your dictionaries, when there is no dictionary for the page's language, or in which language pair a phrase will be saved; the page's own language decides which dictionary answers.
- Reader: a font of your own, typed by name in the settings and chosen as Custom in the Aa panel's Type row (a name typed before this version: press Custom once); a bookmark tab at the bar's edge folds the bar away; the bubble follows the reader's theme; the sentence under a dictionary entry opens collapsed.
- Read aloud: no more wrong-language voice on a page that lists its voices late, or under Brave's fingerprinting shield.
- Smaller fixes: WikDict's source annotations no longer show in dictionary entries; the settings put the two daily switches before the language pair; the footnote card and long links in dark mode; the Aa panel's edge.

What's new since 0.5.28
- Private browsing: the reader, the reading list, the highlights, the saved phrases and the settings show a notice at the top when they are opened in a private window or tab. Firefox uses a separate, empty database for the extension there and deletes it when the private session ends, so the reading list looked empty and an imported book seemed lost - everything was still there in a normal tab. The notice says so.
