uBlock Origin by Raymond Hill

by Firefox user 14655365, 9 months agoOn May 4, 2025, Raymond Hill, the lead developer of uBlock Origin, removed Ukrainian filters from the regional section without any explanation. These filters were created by Ukrainians for Ukrainians, and were developed and optimized with attention to each individual website in the Ukrainian internet. They were highly effective in blocking ads, phishing, and other unwanted content on Ukrainian sites.
Instead, they were replaced by Russian filters (RU AdList and the so-called "Ukrainian" filters from the Russian company AdGuard). These are overloaded with blocking rules tailored for the Russian web (Runet) rather than the Ukrainian region. I don't even understand why AdGuard labels them as "Ukrainian regional" when the only thing Ukrainian about them is the name, while the filters themselves are clearly made for the Russian region.
Moreover, these Russian filters are of very poor quality and ineffective at blocking ads, phishing, and other threats on Ukrainian websites. Literally, after the first attempt to use these filters, I started seeing ads for online casinos and other garbage right away.
To make things worse, these Russian filters contain politically motivated blocklists — they block absolutely all Ukrainian charity foundations individually.
As a Ukrainian user, I am outraged by the developer’s position.

- Rated 2 out of 5by independent_forever, 5 days agoGenerally, this does work especially on YouTube to block all of those annoying ads and other garbage. BUT, it also breaks way too many legit sites especially financial and others that I use all the time. Whitelisting or disabling doesn't seem to work for them and my only solution is to remove the extension. I know it is the installed extension because I can use Chrome without any problem that doesn't have this extension installed on these same sites. I've tried looking around in the extension but the list of things it blocks on many sites sometimes is so long that it's just not worth trying each one to see which, if any is causing the problem. Not to mention I don't like constantly trying banking site logins as their systems could see my attempts as fraud or someone trying to attempt multiple logins who aren't account holders so forget that.....locking my bank accounts just to test this extension isn't worth the hassle. Again, it does what it promises but sometimes having it installed breaks too many legit sites.
