Ctrl+Left Click on a shortcut does not open a link in a new tab. I assume shortcuts are probably buttons rather than links, but typical key combinations are useful.
The background photo taking a quarter second to fade in is annoying. Having the extension ready all the time in the background would be nice, that way the startpage only has to be loaded on firefox start.

You can open link in a new tab by clicking with the mouse wheel, but you're right, we'll add the ctrl+click combination too.
As for the background taking time to load, new tab pages are just website pages and can only load when you request it. You can add this line to your custom style settings to see if you prefer without fade in:
#interface #background_overlay { transition: none }

For too long I've put off changing my homepage from Firefox's default and I was recommended Bonjourr. The setup was so simple, it is almost dumb. There is a ton of customization without forcing you to dive deep (you can even limit the settings with one click). If something is missing, don't worry: Custom CSS snippets probably got you. Amazing product that definitely has room for improvement but is perfect as is.
