HOW IT WORKS

1. See your footprints — know the climate impact
   Click the CarbonGuru button on a product page, shopping cart, receipt, Gmail message, webmail page, order confirmation, supplier page, or any website with product, service, or activity information. You can also paste text, analyze URLs, upload documents, or use CarbonGuru through supported AI agents. Same insight, same impact; exactly where you need it.
2. Get a full lifecycle estimate and climate impact assessment
   CarbonGuru uses AI to understand the item, service, receipt, page, cart, file, or document you provide, then applies established environmental science including LCA and EIO — Environmentally-Extended Input-Output analysis — to calculate the carbon footprint across the full product lifecycle: raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and delivery to you. Results represent the cumulative footprint up to the point the item is in your hands, reported in kg CO₂e — the standard unit for comparing climate impact.

Then CarbonGuru goes a step further: it translates your footprint into a dollar estimate of the long-term climate damage — the real-world cost of those emissions in terms of rising temperatures, extreme weather, crop losses, health impacts, and economic disruption over decades to come. This figure, based on the Social Cost of Carbon used in federal climate policy, puts a concrete price tag on the climate consequences of everyday purchases and business decisions.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

CarbonGuru's estimates are grounded in two well-established scientific frameworks.

Carbon footprint calculations use EIO (Environmentally-Extended Input-Output) analysis. EIO models the entire economy as a web of industries — each one buying from others — and traces emissions through every link in the chain. This gives you a credible, full lifecycle footprint estimate even without access to factory data or supplier lists.

Climate impact calculations use the Social Cost of Carbon (SC-CO₂), the same metric used by the U.S. federal government and international bodies to evaluate the economic damage caused by each additional ton of CO₂. It aggregates projected costs across agriculture, human health, property damage, energy systems, and ecosystem disruption over the lifetime of those emissions. The result is a single dollar figure that represents the real long-term harm of your carbon footprint — making the invisible consequences of emissions concrete and comparable.

AI handles the messy part: reading product titles, receipt text, and web pages to figure out exactly what you bought and map it to the right category. The science handles the rest. AI provides speed and clarity; established environmental and economic models provide accuracy and consistency.

WHAT WE COLLECT

The extension only sends data when you click the CarbonGuru button — it does not passively monitor your browsing. Depending on what you choose to analyze, CarbonGuru may receive the page content and URL of the product, cart, receipt, email, document, or text you provide, plus your account email.
