What Data We Collect

MarkItDown Companion handles the following types of data to function correctly:
- Personal Communications (Chat Logs): The extension extracts your conversational chat logs from AI platforms (Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini) when you use the export functionality or when you request to save snippets/files.
- Token Usage Data: The extension tracks the number of tokens generated in your conversations to provide usage statistics and token management features.

How Data Is Stored

All data is stored locally on your device. The extension uses chrome.storage.local to temporarily hold your token usage metrics and files that you have explicitly chosen to save or export.

How Data Is Used

• Chat Logs: Used exclusively to generate Markdown or PDF exports of your conversations and to transfer selected markdown blocks directly to the MarkItDown web application (markitdown.neosparkx.com).
• Token Usage: Used exclusively to display your token usage statistics (session limits, weekly limits, and efficiency) directly within the extension popup and badge indicator.

Third-Party Services

This extension does not use any third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising services. It operates entirely on your local machine and only communicates with the AI platforms you are actively visiting (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini) and the MarkItDown web application at markitdown.neosparkx.com.

Data Sharing

We do not share, sell, or transmit your data to any third parties. All data extraction, parsing, and export generation (including PDF creation) happens entirely on your local device.

Data Retention and Deletion

Data stored in chrome.storage.local is retained only as long as necessary. The extension automatically cleans up saved files older than 7 days. You can completely erase all locally stored data by uninstalling the extension or clearing the extension's local data through Chrome's extension management settings.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to how we collect or use data, we will update this policy and notify users via an update note in the Chrome Web Store listing.
