Privacy Policy
Last Updated: April 7, 2026
1. Introduction
HeyGarcon ("we", "our", "the extension") is a browser extension available for Chrome and Firefox. This policy explains what data is collected, how it is used, and your rights regarding that data.
2. What We Collect
2a. Anonymous Analytics
We collect anonymous usage statistics through PostHog (us.i.posthog.com) to understand how the extension is used and improve it over time.
What is sent to PostHog:
- A randomly generated install ID (UUID v4) — created on first install, stored locally in your browser. It is not linked to your identity in any way.
- Event names indicating which features were used (e.g., "copy_clicked", "format_changed", "verify_started").
- The extension version and a library identifier ("hey-garcon-extension").
What is NOT collected:
- Your name, email address, or any account information
- The content of your AI conversations
- Your browsing history or activity outside supported AI platforms
- Any personally identifiable information
You can opt out of analytics at any time via the Settings page in the extension. When opted out, no data is sent to PostHog.
2b. Support & Feedback
If you contact us via our website or issue tracker, you may voluntarily provide your name and email. This information is used solely to respond to your request.
3. AI Conversation Data
Your AI conversations are never sent to our servers. All export and formatting operations happen locally in your browser. Exported files are saved directly to your device or clipboard.
4. Clipboard Access
To capture properly formatted content from AI platforms, the extension temporarily intercepts clipboard write operations on supported pages (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Copilot) during an active export. This interception is:
- Active only while you are performing an export
- Limited to reading content that the AI platform itself writes to the clipboard
- Never used to read arbitrary clipboard content or transmit data externally
5. Permissions Used
The extension requests the following browser permissions:
- activeTab / tabs: to identify the current AI platform and interact with it
- scripting: to inject content scripts into supported AI pages
- clipboardWrite: to copy exported content to your clipboard
- downloads: to save exported files to your device
- storage: to save your settings (analytics opt-out, format preferences)
- Host permissions for supported AI domains only (chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai, grok.com, x.com/i/grok, copilot.microsoft.com, copilot.com, bing.com variants)
6. Third-Party Services
Analytics: PostHog (posthog.com) — receives anonymous event data as described in Section 2a. PostHog's privacy policy applies to data processed on their servers.
AI Platforms: When you use the "Get a second opinion" feature, the extension opens a tab on a third-party AI platform and prefills a draft. That platform's own privacy policy governs any data you submit there.
7. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties, except:
- PostHog, as described above
- When required by law or legal process
8. Your Rights
- Opt out of analytics: Settings page in the extension
- Delete your anonymous install ID: clear extension storage via your browser's extension management page
- Request information or correction: contact us via the website
9. Children's Privacy
The extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy periodically. The "Last Updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance.
