Ketuvia: accessible YouTube captions troch Yonatan Mateo Aviv

A customizable Firefox and Chrome extension made with Deaf people and those with sensory processing differences in mind.

YouTube shows its auto-generated subtitles one word at a time, each word appearing at the moment it is spoken. This goes directly against accessibility practice: for captions to be usable they must form sentences that can be scanned at a glance before they are fully uttered, so the viewer can return their eyes to the video after reading.

Ketuvia replaces that word-by-word closed captioning with line-by-line phrases, and lets you decide how they look:

• Font, size, color, opacity, bold and outline
• Number of lines (1, 2 or 3) and caption width
• Position anywhere on the video
• Background opacity, from none/transparent to fully opaque

It also carries your phrasing into Firefox's picture-in-picture pop-out, repairs the letter-by-letter captions used by some broadcast news channels, and can leave a channel's hand-written subtitles exactly as the author wrote them.

Useful if you are Deaf or hard of hearing, or if you have dyslexia, ADHD, an auditory processing difference, or you simply find word-by-word subtitles distracting.

Works on YouTube in Firefox, Firefox for Android, Chrome and other Chromium browsers. Zero data collection, account, tracking (privacy focused!).
