We often hear how much political campaigns are spending on advertisements designed to persuade voters. Members of the media, watchdogs, and researchers focus mainly on old-fashioned television advertisements. But what about new types of ads—the ads you see on social media or the emails in your inbox?

Where do these ads come from? Who pays for them? Is the ad you receive the same as your neighbors? Do politicians say the same thing to different people? Until now, we have lacked tools to answer many of these questions, but you can help change that.

Your participation in Project DATA will help our society better understand how political campaigns disseminate information, why political groups target certain types of voters while ignoring others, and what that means for democracy.
