How is GemType different from Grammarly?
GemType runs on your own Gemini API key instead of a paid subscription, so unlimited checks and rewrites are free. Nothing is stored on a GemType server, there is no account, and it is fully open source. Grammarly supports Google Docs; GemType does not, because Google restricts that to whitelisted vendors.

Your text goes only to Google's Gemini API, using your own key. There is no GemType server, no account, and no analytics. Password, payment, and one-time-code fields are never read.

Because it checks your writing wherever you type, it has to run on the page you are writing on — the same permission Grammarly and every writing extension use. Yes. GemType auto-detects your language and checks it with the same model, or you can pin a language in settings.
