Research Watchdog for Zotero

Research Watchdog for Zotero is a cross‑browser extension that searches multiple
scholarly APIs and pushes the results into a Zotero collection. The extension
deduplicates by DOI, tags items, and attaches open‑access PDFs when available.
Searches run only when you request them from the popup; there is no automated
background schedule.

Usage

1. Install the extension. Load the unpacked directory into your browser's
   developer mode.
2. Configure settings. Open the options page to enter your Zotero user ID,
   API key, target collection name, query block, and tagging preferences.
3. Run a search. Open the popup and press the run button. New items that
   match your query are added to the specified Zotero collection.

Settings can be saved to or loaded from a plain‑text file. The options page also
supports multiple named profiles for different query/collection combinations.

Data storage and handling

• All settings (including the Zotero API key) are stored locally using browser
  storage. They are never sent to any third‑party service other than the APIs
  you explicitly query.
• The extension caches DOIs from your Zotero library to avoid adding duplicates
  and records the timestamp and items from the last manual run.
• API queries are made directly from your browser to OpenAlex, Crossref, Europe
  PMC, Semantic Scholar, arXiv, and Unpaywall.
