The Discipline of Odysseus Autor: smkumaill
Bind yourself to the mast. Delay distracting sites behind a countdown instead of blocking them outright, and meet a reason to go back to work. A Ulysses pact for your browser, with block sets and schedules.

O tym rozszerzeniu
Odysseus had his crew fill their ears with wax, but he had himself tied to the mast — he
wanted to hear the Sirens and be unable to steer onto the rocks. That's the idea here.
Hard blockers get switched off. A delay gets obeyed. When you land on a site you've listed,
you get a countdown and one reason to go back to work instead — and you can still choose to
go through, which is what makes it survivable.
BLOCK SETS
Group sites however you like, and give each group its own rules:
• Make me wait — a countdown, then you may continue
• Block outright — no countdown, no way through
• An access window after the wait, so you get five minutes rather than the rest of the day
• A daily time budget for the whole set, counted only while you're actually looking at it
• Days and hours, so a set can apply only during work time
• Exceptions, so you can delay all of reddit except the one subreddit you need
A "try an address" box tells you which set would catch a URL, on which pattern, and whether
it's inside its schedule right now — so you never have to guess what your rules do.
THE WAITING PAGE
One quote per stop, in a voice you choose: encouraging, hard truths from the Stoics, vivid
pictures of your future self, or a blunt drill sergeant. Or let it surprise you from
whichever of those you tick.
There is deliberately no "new quote" button. A page whose job is to interrupt a
novelty-seeking loop must not itself become a source of novelty.
You can add your own lines, and set a one-line reminder of what you were supposed to be
doing — which lands harder than anything from the internet. There's also a box to write down
the stray thought that sent you off, so your brain can let go of it.
CONTENT NOTE
The "drill sergeant" voice contains strong language and explicit profanity. It is NOT
included by default — you have to switch it on in Settings.
PRIVACY
Nothing is transmitted anywhere. The extension makes no network requests at all: your block
sets, settings and notes live only in your own browser profile, and the manifest declares no
data collection. The "access your data for all websites" permission is needed only to see a
navigation before the page loads and redirect it to the waiting page — any site could be one
you choose to list, so it can't be narrowed.
Open source. Firefox 142 or newer.
