WebShanks Site Inspector is a browser extension provided by WebShanks. This policy explains what information the extension accesses, where processing occurs, and the choices available to users.

Summary
WebShanks Site Inspector detects the hostname of the active browser tab after the user opens the extension. It uses that hostname to perform user-requested DNS checks or to open a selected diagnostic tool on WebShanks.

The extension does not sell personal information, display advertising, read page content, access passwords, inspect cookies, or build a browsing profile.

Information accessed by the extension
Current website hostname
When the user opens the extension, it reads the URL of the active tab and extracts only its hostname, such as example.com. The extension does not analyze or retain the page path, query string, page contents, form entries, cookies, or browsing history.

The hostname is used to populate the extension interface and run the diagnostic selected by the user.

Information stored locally
The extension may store the following information in browser extension storage:

Favorite domains selected by the user.
A short list of recently checked domains.
DNS lookup results cached for approximately five minutes.
This information remains in the user’s browser. It is not synchronized to a WebShanks account. Users can remove it by clearing recent domains, removing favorites, clearing extension data, or uninstalling the extension.

Inline DNS checks
MX, SPF, DMARC, TXT, NS, CAA and DNSSEC checks are performed through Cloudflare’s encrypted DNS-over-HTTPS resolver. The selected hostname and requested DNS record type are sent to Cloudflare so that the DNS query can be answered.

WebShanks does not receive the inline DNS response or lookup history from the extension. Cloudflare processes DNS queries under its own privacy terms.

WebShanks website tools
Some diagnostics cannot run inside a browser extension. When the user explicitly selects one of these tools, the extension opens the corresponding page on webshanks.com and includes the selected domain, hostname, or public IP address in the page URL.

These tools include WHOIS, SSL, SMTP, port, blacklist, reverse DNS, DNS propagation, disposable-email and email-provider checks. Information submitted to these tools is processed under the WebShanks Tools Privacy Policy.

The extension does not open these website-based diagnostics automatically in the background. They are opened only after a user selects the corresponding tool.

Feedback
When a user selects Feedback, the extension opens the existing WebShanks feedback form. The page URL may contain the current hostname and extension version to provide context.

If the user submits feedback, WebShanks receives the selected rating, optional comment, optional reply email address, page URL and submission time. DNS scan results are not attached to feedback.

Browser permissions
activeTab: Reads the active tab URL after user interaction so the extension can extract its hostname.
storage: Stores favorites, recent domains and short-lived DNS results locally.
contextMenus: Adds an “Inspect with WebShanks” action to the browser’s context menu.
cloudflare-dns.com host access: Sends user-requested encrypted DNS queries to Cloudflare’s DNS-over-HTTPS resolver.
The extension does not request access to all websites, cookies, downloads, location, microphone, camera or browsing history.

Data sharing
The extension shares a selected hostname or DNS query only when needed to provide a user-facing feature:

With Cloudflare for inline DNS-over-HTTPS lookups.
With WebShanks when the user opens a WebShanks website tool or feedback page.
WebShanks does not sell extension user information or use it to create advertising profiles.

Security
Remote requests use HTTPS. All executable extension code is included in the installed extension package. The extension does not download or execute remote JavaScript.

Children’s privacy
The extension is a technical diagnostic utility and is not directed to children. WebShanks does not knowingly collect personal information from children through the extension.

Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when extension features or data practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will be revised when material changes are published.
