We are at the mercy of whatever DNS filtering service we use on the backend, which is often not as configurable as we'd like. As of July 2019, the service we use is OpenDNS porn+malware blocking DNS. I can add hard-coded exceptions into the plug-in, as long as they are very obviously of benefit to all users.

This extension does not claim to block ads -- it blocks access to known porn and malware domains, nothing more or less. If the ads are being served from a legitimate domain, you are faulting it for something it was not designed to do. What you need is an adblocker. I recommend uBlock Origin.
