Historically, near the time of the autumnal equinox, when evil spirits were on the loose, turnips, gourds, potatoes and other items were hollowed and carved, then lit from within for protection from supernatural mischief. The Jack-o'-lantern was brought to American culture by Irish immigrants in the 1800s.
