sloppy lightswitch is a tiny extension that tells websites little lies about your light/dark mode. your system is light but you want that one blog dark? dark. your system is dark but a certain forum only looks right in light? light. everything at once? also fine. the extension never argues, it just flips the switch and goes back to sleep ~

three modes, because three is plenty:

system - nothing happens. the extension politely pretends it does not exist.
light - the page is convinced your scheme is light. it is not. shh.
dark - the page is convinced your scheme is dark. we will never tell.

pick a mode for everywhere in the popup, and while you are on a site, pick a different one just for it. per-site wins, because the site you are actually looking at is the one that matters uwu

there is also a settings page (add-ons manager > sloppy lightswitch > settings) with every per-site switch in one crooked list, plus "the sloppy list": a plain text box where you just type

blog.example.org dark
docs.example.com light

one site per line, and that is the whole configuration. no forms, no wizards, no cloud, no account. this is also the way in on firefox for android when the popup is being shy.

how it works, for the curious: the lie is told before any page script runs, including those anti-flash theme sniffers that decide your colours in the first 20ms. window.matchMedia, css @media (prefers-color-scheme) rules, media="" attributes and the browser's own color-scheme pick for form controls and scrollbars all fall for it. pages come up in the mode you picked instead of flickering into it >w<

what it does not do: collect anything, phone home, or touch your network. your switches sit in your own browser storage and nowhere else.

sloppy edges, honestly: pages that are already open pick up a mode change on their next reload, and a site with a very strict style-src csp can block the cross-origin stylesheet swap. we said sloppy. we meant it.
