This is a known api limitation. Please read the addon description for more information. However if you change your new tab page to a normal website, for example by using NewTabOverride (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/?src=search) gestures will work there.

Hey. There is a reason for that. You can also see it at "Take Screenshot" (Mozilla extension). Click the right mouse button on a page and you can take a screenshot. But not here or on about:[x]. It's the same reason why Gesturefy can't do this either. API limitations of webextensions. (But the development of Mozilla's webextensions is still in progress)

FunFact: Zur Zeit vor den Webextensions, also vor FF 57, gab es von Mozilla noch keine Berechtigungen. Für den Nutzer also nicht leicht einsehbar, was das Addon konnte. Es konnte sogar mehr, als wenn man jetzt alle Berechtigungen vergeben würde.

Edit: "Aber wozu all diese Brechtigungen? Inakzeptabel!" in der Addon Beschreibung werden doch alle benutzten Berechtigungen erklärt.
Aber, es gibt die Idee, nur dann die Berechtigungen zu geben, wenn man sie braucht. Aber das wird noch einige Zeit dauern bis das umgesetzt wird. https://github.com/Robbendebiene/Gesturefy/issues/93 (für mehr infos)

If you mean the sidebar with the bookmarks or the right menu, then that does not work.
