Universal Fake Camera is a browser extension that lets the user replace their live camera feed with a locally selected image or video when a website requests camera access through getUserMedia.
Data We Process
- user-selected image or video files used as the fake camera source;
- extension settings such as selected source type, stream dimensions, playback options, and quick profiles;
- the current tab context needed to apply or restore the fake camera on a page the user chooses to control;
- camera request state within supported pages so the extension can switch between the fake source and the real camera.
The extension does not require account creation and does not collect payment information, contacts, health data, or analytics identifiers.
How Data Is Used
The processed data is used only to provide the extension's user-facing functionality:
- render the fake camera stream selected by the user;
- save the user's preferences locally so the extension keeps its configuration between sessions;
- apply or restore the configured camera behavior on the tab the user is actively controlling.
How Data Is Shared
- Universal Fake Camera does not send user-selected media, settings, browsing data, or page content to the developer's servers because the extension does not use external servers for its core functionality.
- Universal Fake Camera does not sell, rent, or share user data with advertisers, data brokers, or analytics providers.
- When the user activates the extension on a website, the selected fake image or video stream is delivered to that website as part of the camera session requested by that website. This happens only because the user is using the extension for that purpose.
Storage And Retention
- Selected media and extension settings are stored locally in the browser's extension storage area on the user's device.
- Stored data remains on the device until the user changes it, clears the extension's data, or removes the extension.
- No separate cloud retention period applies because the extension does not upload this data to a remote backend.
Permissions
- storage and unlimitedStorage are used to save settings and locally selected media.
- tabs is used to identify and update the monitored tab the user wants to control.
- Host permissions for http:/// and https:/// are used only so the extension can run on pages where the user wants to replace the requested camera stream.
Website Content And Browsing Activity
The extension runs on pages where the user wants to control camera behavior. It may access the page context required to intercept and replace camera requests, but it does not transmit page content or general browsing activity to external services.
User Controls
Users can control their data by changing or removing the selected image or video source inside the extension UI, clearing the extension's stored settings and media through the browser's extension management tools, or uninstalling the extension at any time.
