Grammar and Spell Checker - LanguageTool by LanguageTooler GmbH

by Voytash, 5 months agoI've been using LanguageTool for almost three years, and until recently I would have happily given it 5 stars.
Unfortunately, the recent changes to the free version have made the extension almost unusable for me. After the initial Premium trial ends, the extension no longer functions as a grammar checker, which completely defeats the reason I installed it in the first place.
I'm not giving 1 star because the software itself is bad. Quite the opposite — that's exactly why these changes are so disappointing. LanguageTool used to be an excellent free writing assistant, but now I'll have to look for an alternative.
I understand that developers need to make money, but the free version has become so limited that, for me, it has lost the value that made it worth installing.

It's spyware. Even if you pay for that, which I regret doing.
Interesting nuance is that I believe couple of years ago it was not like this. Since US company (probably private equity) bought this, it turned into spyware. - Rated 1 out of 5by a_bored_browser_and_writer, 14 hours agoThis worked great for me for many years. Unfortunately, now the basic function of spelling and grammar fixes are locked behind the premium service, so it's basically useless outside of the in-browser editor for me. How sad that they've done this.

Worked well while it lasted but it's unusable now - Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 20064595, 2 days ago

- Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 19696547, 2 days agoThey want you to pay to use this. It was free for many years. Must have sold to private equity.
- Rated 1 out of 5by Disastrous-Class, 3 days agoWas free, now it's not. Suddenly ran out of premium which I never signed up for. Now it doesn't work. No point in having this now.

I've found it strange that they couldn't just make this run locally instead of pinging their server all the time. It's no wonder why they need money to keep the server up. (Excuse for greed, maybe?)
For those looking for a replacement: Harper - Rated 1 out of 5by jasgrider, 3 days agoI'm uninstalling this add on as I cannot afford their paywalled premium service. It worked well in the past couple of years I've had it installed. The subscription for an individual month is $25 un-discounted if you don't pay them quarterly, yearly, or biannually.
Another good thing ruined by moving to a subscription model. - Rated 1 out of 5by NoaBoa, 4 days ago
- Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 20061723, 4 days agoThis has previously been a fantastic extension, however, in the latest update they have paywalled the extension. I have also found after this update while using the trial that there is significantly more errors than before, like recommending capitalization where there is no reason to capitalize. I believe they have increased the use of generative AI in checking the grammar which has led to these issues.

- Rated 1 out of 5by Ch, 5 days agoHistorically, I had a great experience with this app as it usually worked well, but recently I started experiencing repeated errors and duplicate fixes. Now they are also restricting the service to a paid service
