You can investigate as much about a word as you possibly can think of as the dictionaries available are many and varied. That and saving words looked up in a list that is also exportable is a great tool!
The only issue I have is having to give permissions to a lot of data collecting, which today seems far more problematic than back when I first hit the internet in the late 90s. I sure miss the sense of freedom, and genuine goodwill of that time on the net that quickly disappeared after the utter commodifying and commercializing that occurred post 2004. I guess we've had a good 30 or so years, but like all things. Once that commercial aspect drops in, everything turns to crap.Respuesta del desarrollador
publicado el hace 2 mesesAha, the good old days! I remember ~10 years ago when I just started this project, the internet was like the wild west. Cookies hadn't eaten the world yet, and I just checked every permission that I thought would be useful for this tool. Neither Firefox nor Chrome couldn't care less, my extension just lived its best life, silently running on every website it visited.
Then, maybe about four years ago, Firefox gave me a reality check. They told me, "Hey, you need to explain these permissions and get actual consent from user, or we will pull the plug." I was spooked! I told them, "But I don't collect anything!" and Firefox basically replied, "Naj, you’re handling a ton of data. You just don't realize it."
So their solution is that instead of making developers write long essays, browsers now show those "scary" popups warning you that I have access to all data on all website etc. It sounds intense, but it’s all in the name of transparency. And on my side I’ve had to write a proper privacy policy to explain every bit of data I handled.
I’m not complaining, though. I’ve learned that privacy is a core value, and data is just as valuable as money, and losing it usually means losing freedom. I’m still a minimalist at heart: I don’t collect anything unless it’s 100% necessary. I don't even use web analytics like most other devs do. If I absolutely have to handle data for a feature to work, I make sure it’s declared in the app, documented in the policy file, and write about it on my site or in my blog post.
To address your concerns (which are totally legit):
1. The app is open-source.
2. The privacy policy is transparently hosted on GitHub and Firefox.
3. Most of the app works right out of the box, no login or registration required.
4. For free features, zero data is sent anywhere. Only some Pro features require a server to function, which is why those need a login to handle things like the specific word or sentence you’re translating.
Thanks for the feedback! It’s great to see people actually care about their privacy. It keeps me on my toes and makes me a better developer. - Se valoró con 4 de 5por Chris Hayes, hace 4 mesesCool extension, I like the various sources it can show and the customization. The popups on text select are annoying though. They keep getting added and I keep turning them off. Though I do appreciate I can individually turn them off.
Edit 1: idk how to reply to replies, so I'm replying as an edit—Some people like the popups on text select, which is fine. As long as I can toggle it off, I'm happy. My personal reason is that I select text as I read, it's a weird habit, but I have heard of other people doing this too. Having a popup appear is too distracting when I'm reading. Which is why I really like that you can configure this extension to only show popups when using a key like Ctrl or Shift.Respuesta del desarrollador
publicado el hace 4 mesesEdit 2: Hi, I listened to your advice, in the new v6.4.1 I added the option to show the selection bubble only when a modifier key (ie. Ctrl, Shift or Alt) is pressed. PS, go to settings you will find the option. And you can press the key either in selection or after.
If you like it, can I earn back the missing star? :D

Edit 1: Thank you again for the feedback. I see, that's good to know. It's really interesting to see different people have different preference and habit. I will add that configuration you suggested.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for the popup parade. I’ve been working like a machine these past few days to add features I was really really excited about, and I thought others would feel the same. Sorry you’ve had to turn them off one by one. If you can, give them a try and let me know what you like or hate about. If you prefer turning them off, please tell me why. I’ll owe you a big favor... And I promise I will take a break for the next few weeks, so no new features will be popping up. - Se valoró con 4 de 5por Usuario de Firefox 18591186, hace 8 meses
- Se valoró con 4 de 5por Matt, hace un añoI really like the simplicity of this app. It just works exactly as it says. There does seem to be a bug with the setting to disable the Captions YouTube link. Every time I disable it and it comes right back the next time I restart Firefox. It's not a big deal but it is annoying.

publicado el hace un añoIt should work correctly. Could you try to remove some of the word history then save the settings again? It could be that the storage of the addon has been used up so that the settings are not persisted. - Se valoró con 4 de 5por nomadrc, hace 3 añosThe best and most comprehensive dictionary extension I've ever used by far. Sometimes however the 'mouse-over-a-word-for-a-definitions-popup' function, will stop working and I need to restart my browser to fix it. Otherwise I love this extension. I am using a non-standard browser (LibreWolf, a fork of Firefox), so this could conceivably be the issue since I haven't tested if it happens in other browsers.

I think one function is missing for 5-stars: I want to easily turn it on and off. With a right click on the button or in the pop-up menu.
Thanks!Respuesta del desarrollador
publicado el hace 4 añosHi, thank you for the feedback. But it actually supports to open from the context menu and left click on the icon button. Isn't it enough? - Se valoró con 4 de 5por anishr, hace 5 añosHey River,
Pretty good addon with only noticeable issue at the moment. Clicking on the pronunciation button often causes a lag in the voice , it hangs or repeats even after clicking once.Respuesta del desarrollador
