I have found Video DownloadHelper indispensable over the years, especially when the browser won't play a video with sound for some reason. It is very useful for cases where you can't get a URL that youtube-dl can use. In some cases it can display a URL that you can download directly with wget or curl, as an alternative to downloading using the plugin. It's a great workaround when you want a video and the site doesn't provide a way for people to download (i.e., streaming only).

Its pretty good for what it does and works well enough most of the time for what I need. No real problems except for anything involving the companion app, which doesn't really work which is a shame since youtube is pretty much a wash now.
I would recommend 4k video downloader for youtube, and this for a lot of other things, possibly most other things

Video DownloadHelper is very easy to use. It downloads in the background and you just work as usual. It downloads videos from sources (like JW Player - which is harder to download from) where most other video download apps would fail. If conversion is needed it will automatically convert. Try it. Video DownloadHelper works great, and it is able to grab videos that other downloaders can't get. I've tried at least 5 or 6, and this one is the best.
