It works but there are some flaws

All fine but one request: if the user presses the Esc key to exit the alert dialog, could it be possible to prevent the key press event from raising and interacting with the DOM?

Does what it says it does. I think it miscounts the number of words occasionally, but it does the job good enough for my purposes.

Works very well with English, except with words with a ' (for instance 's is not counted as a word)
The very good point is that it has more kind of results than any other word/characters counters addons: It also shows the average length of the words, and the longest word in our selected text.
