    I understand that the data-collection labels were upsetting.

    RYD hasn’t changed how it handles your data. What changed is how Mozilla labels these permissions - not what the extension does with your data.

    The extension is actually recommended by Mozilla, so they do not consider it harmful or dangerous.

    The extension only uses the data it needs to show dislikes and count votes.

    Its site permissions cover YouTube and its own API at returnyoutubedislikeapi.com. RYD doesn’t read other websites, and these site permissions cannot be used to access them.

    The new permission request surprised me at first, but after reading the developer's explanation, it makes total sense. It sounds scarier than it actually is, and that's on Mozilla, not the developer. There's no need to be paranoid (it's open source, so you can check the code yourselves!)

    This add-on becomes a spyware after the newest update. It collects your personal info, browsing activity, website activity, etc. Mozilla should remove this from "Recommended" add-ons list!!

    RYD n’a pas changé la façon dont il traite vos données. Ce qui a changé, c’est la façon dont Mozilla présente ces autorisations - pas ce que l’extension fait de vos données.

    L’extension est d’ailleurs recommandée par Mozilla, qui ne la considère donc pas comme nuisible ou dangereuse.

    L’extension utilise uniquement les données dont elle a besoin pour afficher les mentions « Je n’aime pas » et compter les votes.

    Ses autorisations d’accès aux sites couvrent YouTube et sa propre API sur returnyoutubedislikeapi.com. RYD ne lit pas les autres sites, et ces autorisations ne permettent pas d’y accéder.

    Voici ce que signifient ces autorisations :

    Données personnelles - l’identifiant utilisateur anonyme de RYD, généré aléatoirement et utilisé pour compter les votes. Il ne s’agit pas de votre compte Google ou YouTube.

    When I first saw the extension requiring "new" permissions like PII, the first thing I did was check the reviews if anyone had any information on why these new perms were required and if it'd be better to uninstall.

    I was not expecting that person to be the developer of the extension, with a full in-depth explanation of why each new perm was needed, if the extension was trusted, and information on why the permissions were rebranded.

    This is the first time I've EVER seen a developer take the time to read negative reviews, explain, and attempt to help with any issues. I've been using this extension for a while, and I could tell this project was difficult to maintain just based on how it was made.

    You are perhaps the greatest developer I've seen purely for actually listening to what people had to say and addressing the constant 1 star reviews with actual notes. I created an account purely to say that this extension has been great for quite a while now, and keeping servers alive with little monetization, pushing out updates, taking time to read feedback, addressing questions, it's all extremely impressive and genuinely makes me want to support the project. Cheers mate.

    it's probably just nothing, but i still dont trust saying yes to a popup that literally asks to spy on me. i don't know how to code, i can't verify what this permission is actually for, and with the current state of the internet i don't trust any of u guys to tell me if this is legit or not

    i think the best course of action would just be to leave this addon for now and come back when this issue has been resolved

    Datamine your butthole. And your excuse about "extension is actually recommended by Mozilla" is bullshit - because if was recomended BEFORE this update, so label just got transfered further and means nothing. Its not warranty of addon update being checked by mozilla team before publishing.


    Other similiar addons write:

    And thats ALL! Nothing more. While this addon ask not only url's listed above but also asks next:
    Required data collection, according to the developer:
    • Browsing activity (what activity? All my cookies, tabs, and history? For what?)
    • Personally identifying information (lol, what? what exactly information? I know about some kind of rydAPI unique ID for each user, thats not too good to create a user-fingerprint point but fine if this is only thing. But statement DOES NOT clarifies which identifying info its targeting)
    • Website activity (what exactly activity?)
    • Website content (no clarification which content. All It wants I guess?)

    "It's opensorce - go check yourself" - If i would know how to code I would definately created some kind of local script or forked this addon, but I don't. And history actually knows how opensource can be left with unnoticed backdoor, so thrust is very expensive thing and this addon have lost it for sure.

    I Really hope its just a big misunderstanding, as you already answered all those many dislikes i had to just give this one 4/5 Stars, one star less, because it looks so horrible, i really do not like Datamining and i really want to trust you Mr. Dev... soooo I’ve told Mozilla about it, in the hopes that the wording gets corrected to match what the extension is actually doing.
    No one in their right mind would opt into data mining like this, even if it’s just the appearance of it being wrong.
    Especially because many extensions these days are going in that direction, data is the oil of the modern technocracy, so to speak.
    If the concerns are unfounded, I hope you can clarify that soon Mr. Dev. If not, well… i just hope we still can trust you.

    This is definitely a issue of communication, because people are just so tired of their information being stolen that generic tags to do a feature has everyone on high alert.

    The plugin being open source and the dev responding to questions and criticism is what saved it. If a popup for the update happened before its update to explain what it actually does, I feel this would have been avoided.

    I didn't know how this would look to end users. This is pretty new in Firefox.

    The dev is trying to gaslight people in the replies to low star reviews saying that nothing about the extension has change and the reason it is asking for more permissions is just because Mozilla changed how they label the permissions but that's a flat out lie.
    As many others have pointed out the add-on is now gathering unique identifiable user data, there is no way to prove that he is selling user data but it is the most likely explanation.
    The other way the developer keeps trying to gaslight people is by claiming "Clearly nothing changed since we are a recommended add-on" knowing full well that the Recommended badge DOES NOT get reviewed with every new update. I have reported the new practices from this dev to Mozilla and I encourage everybody else do to the same.

    It's gathering a random user id and your votes - likes and dislikes - to show dislike counts. That's how the addon always worked
