- Rated 2 out of 5by Quitch, 17 days agoThe inability to setup profiles, even as a paid subscriber, makes this far less useful than it should be. When you want to bypass your country's censorship the last thing you want is a default connection to servers in your country. Yes, you can manually change it, but this rather undercuts the purpose and convenience that auto-connect brings. Fastest connection to not my country is in the desktop app and I want to see it here too.

If one could at least choose preferred nations rather than having to accept the default picked by the Proton extension, life would be easier. Otherwise, one must disconnect totally from Proton VPN and reconnect later -- or do a quick study in Japanese, Chinese (apologies, Aifun Ltd), etc.!
(Re: ProtonVPN's response) -- I've used NordVPN and Surfshark in the past and I lever lost my language choice. Neither one changed nor corrupted my browser language as ProtonVPN does. Both are linguistically "transparent to the user". If ProtonVPN thinks loss of legibility is "proof" it is working and that illegible browser output that cannot be restored--even when their VPN service is turned off-- is a good trade-off, they're naively mistaken. Proton VPN's algorithm of an arbitrary node selection with hopes that one gets the right language "brass ring" on Proton's node merry-go-round leaves no choice but to give up their VPN protection. Proton could offer users a language preference option, but that seems outside their wherewithal, unlike other VPN providers.
Of course, Proton offers the choice of a paid "upgrade" to solve the loss of language problem. My "test drive" of free Proton VPN shows that it cannot ensure language autonymy; why would I pay to risk more poor performance?Developer response
posted 17 days agoThis is expected since your IP address and geolocation are changed to appear as if you're in the country that our server is located in. It means that Proton VPN is working as intended. Whatever server you connect to, you're likely to be served content in the language of that server's country.
That said, the default Connect option will connect you to the fastest available server for you. This leads to better load balancing and higher speed, which is a priority for free users. You still have the option to switch to another randomly allocated server, or you can upgrade to connect to a specific server in a country of your choice. - Rated 2 out of 5by idontknow651, a month agoI think a VPN extension only really needs ONE feature: quick-connect to a previously favorited country.
It is ridiculous that ProtonVPN does not have this.
I would take ANYTHING:
- A way to pin/favorite countries or servers
- A second button next to Connect that
- An option in the settings for what happens when I left click the extension
- create a hotkey to auto-connect to my favorites
I've only ever EVER used it to connect to a different country. But if I don't manually choose it in the list, then it will choose MINE. Why?! It's basically useless.
And I specifically only ever use Japan 99% of the time, and the US in the remaining 1%.
(I suspect a great majority of people use it similarly. Mostly one country.)
Both of which—because the list is in alphabetic order—I literally cannot even simply scroll down to!
Japan takes about 4 wheel turns, and the US takes 8.
So, evidently, I instead search for them. Just typing J or U is enough.
And THANKFULLY the search input is automatically focused. This is why the app gets 2 stars, not 1.Developer response
posted a month agoSorry to hear that. The default Connect option will connect you to the fastest available server for you, which is often one that's closer to your actual location. That said, although the option to favorite servers or countries is not available at the moment, we've added your vote to the existing feature request so the team can prioritize it accordingly. I constantly lose connection when trying to stream content on my browser. When I disconnect from the extension I have no connection issues. I have two server locations close to me and I try to switch when my connection slows down. But, this doesn't seem to help.

Tech support wants pics & all the hairy details to solve simple, common problems. With every biz wanting fee for service, the public is getting nickled & dimed to death to give a CEO gas for their Bentley!

posted 3 months agoThat doesn't sound right. The extension affects your browser only, and not your entire system. That said, would you mind sharing your ticket number with us here? the issue is it automatically connects you to a server, they say it use the fastest one but actually its random. for me for example netherland and romani servers works good but it auto connects me randomly to USA and Poland which do not work so i have to press the change btn a lot of times to randomly get netherland or romani. the system actually sucks it didnt used to be this wayDeveloper response

If you'd like to connect to a specific server in a country of your choice, you may consider upgrading your plan.
That said, can you let us know what exactly doesn't work when connected to our free US and Poland servers? Contact us with more details by clicking on Help in the Proton VPN extension, then selecting 'Contact us' so we can assist you further. Developer response
posted 5 months agoThat doesn’t sound right. Could you share more details about the issue? Are you receiving any error messages? Are you using any other extensions for privacy/security purposes? Do you have any antivirus or firewall app installed? Therefore those Proxies are no longer available. The Proton VPN Firefox Extension could do a self check and provide better user experience in these situations. Does Proton doesn't have an automatic Flow at their servers?
- Rated 2 out of 5by kurzakko, 8 months agoЗапускается один раз, дальше просто скидывает и выдает ошибку.

Unfortunately it very frequently fails to connect, or will say it's connected but you can't actually load any web pages. Sometimes the extension itself will even say that it is having trouble connecting and needs to be reinstalled which does work...until the same problem happens all over again. If it weren't for the reliability issues it would be an easy 4-star extension, with the 5th star being reserved for feature-parity with the mobile and desktop apps.

This is a major issue for anyone looking to maintain their privacy on-the-go.
If I were to use a VPN app that connects me to my home server, I wouldn't have the option of using the native Proton VPN client as well.
The lack of mobile support for this extension is a serious issue.Developer response

Since then it has done nothing but block all connections in Firefox, while other browsers work flawlessly with the same sites at the same time.
Disconnecting and reconnecting accomplishes nothing. I can't use this.Developer response

- Rated 2 out of 5by Firefox user 18191082, a year agoLatest update has me stuck on the "press Next and then Allow" screen for permissions, but there is no 'Next' button to click, and checking the add-on says all permissions are enabled.

- Rated 2 out of 5by Firefox user 13659045, 2 years agoIt's buggy. At the beginning it would keep reconnecting and switching server all the time, though this was a few months ago so I don't know if that's fixed. But now I tried using it again and its supposed to reconnect when restarting browser but instead it gets stuck and doesn't connect. I had to disable the extension. Also if my internet goes out the vpn doesn't automatically reconnect I have to manually disconnect and connect again.
- Rated 2 out of 5by MB, 2 years agoIncredibly flaky VPN connection. I can be happiliy browsing then things .... just ... stop. Then I look at the extension icon and it's a warning yellow. It's disconnected with no notification. So I click to reconnect and a notification shows "Connected", BUT the actual window still shows connecting, and more often than not that connection actually fails.
It's got nice features with split tunneling and so on, but way too frustrating to use regularly. - Rated 2 out of 5by Firefox user 13594626, 2 years agoThe Proton VPN service is good, but the extension is incredibly buggy. After every time I restart my browser, wake up my computer from sleep, or just randomly when it loses the connection, the only way to reconnect is to disable the extension then enable it again. Sometimes I have to do this multiple times to make it work.
- Rated 2 out of 5by mastik, 3 years agoThe application is extremely raw!
1. There is no protection against IP tracking
2. There is no automatic reconnection in case of connection loss
3. Frequent disconnections - Rated 2 out of 5by Firefox user 17954442, 3 years agoAlthough I love the idea behind the app, using it has seriously downgraded my internet experience. Works fine after installation, but alfter closing my browser and restarting it, it shows connected but none of my (buffered) pages will load. Disconnecting and reconnecting more often than not results in the app saying it can't make a connection to the server. The only way I get it to work so far is disconnecting vpn, loading pages without the vpn connection, and then connecting VPN again - miraculously, suddenly, it connects to the servers. But having to load pages without vpn first seems to beat the purpose of it. This is not the robust proton applicatin quality I've come to love, I'll be switching back to the desktop app.
- Rated 2 out of 5by RT, 3 years agoIt's nice to have a proton vpn extension. However, after successfully conneting, all traffic in the browser is blocked by the company firewall. The extension needs measures to circumvent blocks, otherwise is useless in most relevant cases (or countries).
edit: secure core is blocked too. Using the proton desktop application, only stealth protocol is able to connectDeveloper response
posted 3 years agoHello, can you maybe try Secure Core, as it's using a different port on the browser extension, if a firewall is blocking by port, it might fix it.
