If one could at least choose preferred nations rather than having to accept the default picked by the Proton extension, life would be easier. Otherwise, one must disconnect totally from Proton VPN and reconnect later -- or do a quick study in Japanese, Chinese (apologies, Aifun Ltd), etc.!
(Re: ProtonVPN's response) -- I've used NordVPN and Surfshark in the past and I lever lost my language choice. Neither one changed nor corrupted my browser language as ProtonVPN does. Both are linguistically "transparent to the user". If ProtonVPN thinks loss of legibility is "proof" it is working and that illegible browser output that cannot be restored--even when their VPN service is turned off-- is a good trade-off, they're naively mistaken. Proton VPN's algorithm of an arbitrary node selection with hopes that one gets the right language "brass ring" on Proton's node merry-go-round leaves no choice but to give up their VPN protection. Proton could offer users a language preference option, but that seems outside their wherewithal, unlike other VPN providers.
Of course, Proton offers the choice of a paid "upgrade" to solve the loss of language problem. My "test drive" of free Proton VPN shows that it cannot ensure language autonymy; why would I pay to risk more poor performance?
(Again a 2/20/26 update, solicited by Proton:) Nothing new, better or improved. Same language corruption, same poor choices of 10 (Proton's lead-in still says "5") lands in their "take what you get and shut up!" node lottery in the brass ring grab that corrupts your set language --"proof that it's working...", says Proton. Oh, but you can opt for another bad choice by simply selecting "Change..." and waiting up to 10 minutes for another--likely poor--choice and hope it speaks your language. All this could be lessened if not done away with by allowing us freeloaders (who'd pay for this kind of performance and service?) to specify a language preference on signing up. Nope. Too complicated for Proton's team to implement.
So from me, still one star.Відповідь розробника

It means that Proton VPN is working as intended. Whatever server you connect to, you're likely to be served content in the language of that server's country.
That said, the default Connect option will connect you to the fastest available server for you. This leads to better load balancing and higher speed, which is a priority for free users. You still have the option to switch to another randomly allocated server, or you can upgrade to connect to a specific server in a country of your choice. - Оцінка 4 з 5від lostriver, 5 місяців томуPretty great for all my uses and never had a problem connecting. Dropping one star because it's missing the favourite feature from the PC app, forcing me to scroll through the entire list of countries to find what I want instead of pinning my favourite to the top.

Sometimes it even needs the browser to be restarted. Encountered it already on the first day I started to use it, contacted CS, and learnt that everything was fine.
Other annoyances: requesting every few weeks to write a review. - Оцінка 5 з 5від lonniganseaweed, 5 місяців тому

If this is not improving soon, I'll unsubscribe me from proton. Also, in the beginning there was a greater choice of servers per country. But now the servers are mostly busy, busy, busy. No good service.
For a free service nice but for a payed service very poor!
After contact with the Proton helpdesk the problems got resolved. Super! Good servide.Відповідь розробника

Contact us at https://protonvpn.com/support/contact with more details about the websites in question and the servers you're connected to when trying to access them so we can note your feedback for future improvement. Meanwhile, try switching between multiple different servers to see how it goes.
On another note, we constantly monitor server loads and our team makes sure to provision additional servers in areas where there's constant high demand. - Оцінка 5 з 5від Користувач Firefox 12545843, 5 місяців томуI use the pro/paid version, and honestly I've had some issues with it during this time (specifically, connection problems or incredibly slow performance), but they were swiftly addressed and, truth be told, that happens with every app from time to time. My overall experience has been positive, and I'm a happy user.

NOTHING IS HOLDING YOU BACK, JUST DO IT. Happy to have Proton btw ;)

On Windows the extension reconnects when the system wakes, but on macOS* the extension gums up the whole browser if the system went to sleep with the VPN connected, necessitating unloading and reloading the extension.
* Intel-64 architecture; have not had the problem since switching to Apple SiliconВідповідь розробника

I get that it's free but at least let the users choose which countries they want to connect to among the limited numbers.

It is ridiculous that ProtonVPN does not have this.
I would take ANYTHING:
- A way to pin/favorite countries or servers
- A second button next to Connect that
- An option in the settings for what happens when I left click the extension
- create a hotkey to auto-connect to my favorites
I've only ever EVER used it to connect to a different country. But if I don't manually choose it in the list, then it will choose MINE. Why?! It's basically useless.
And I specifically only ever use Japan 99% of the time, and the US in the remaining 1%.
(I suspect a great majority of people use it similarly. Mostly one country.)
Both of which—because the list is in alphabetic order—I literally cannot even simply scroll down to!
Japan takes about 4 wheel turns, and the US takes 8.
So, evidently, I instead search for them. Just typing J or U is enough.
And THANKFULLY the search input is automatically focused. This is why the app gets 2 stars, not 1.Відповідь розробника
оприлюднено 5 місяців томуSorry to hear that. The default Connect option will connect you to the fastest available server for you, which is often one that's closer to your actual location. That said, although the option to favorite servers or countries is not available at the moment, we've added your vote to the existing feature request so the team can prioritize it accordingly. - Оцінка 3 з 5від Davide, 5 місяців тому1. Can not specify favorite countries. You have to search a list of 900 countries, even though everyone mostly only uses a handful of them.
2. Can not be enabled only for specific *containers* (to specied countries.)
This is also easily possible with other VPNs via the Mozilla Container extension, if you would have a SOCKS5 proxy address. to use with Proton...
Other than that, it works.Відповідь розробника

When I disconnect from the extension I have no connection issues. I have two server locations close to me and I try to switch when my connection slows down. But, this doesn't seem to help.
