if browser/session restarts the extension needs to be disabled re-enabled or sometimes removed and reinstalled for it to work.
otherwise a great extension.

firefox and linux broken. both versions have authentication persistence issues. log out, disable, re enable, re log is only fix. been like this for ages. why does the linux version suck so bad in comparison of windows....

With only this vpn specifically proton services are not reachable, but work with different vpn.

Proton is a really good service, but VPN latence is really bad compared to NordVPN which is one that I tried also!

I'm using this on linux mint, and basically whenever i install it, it will work for a few hours. Then the next day when i try to load any page, it will fail. Even if I disconnect from the VPN it still fails. The only thing that works is to delete the entire extension and redownload it and log in, which takes too long.
Need to fix this issue, otherwise app unusable

critical bug can cause firefox to crash and freeze when enabled and will cause it to also instantly hang on start up of firefox. need to run in "-safe-mode" to disable proton.

The "take what you get" free server idea would be OK if it didn't corrupt one's browser language settings so that, for example, if one draws a Japanese server then one's browser language becomes Japanese and can't be reset--and yes, Firefox has default language control, but it doesn't work to reset the langauge. If one could at least choose preferred nations rather than having to accept the default picked by the Proton extension, life would be easier. Otherwise, one must disconnect totally from Proton VPN and reconnect later -- or do a quick study in Japanese, Chinese (apologies, Aifun Ltd), etc.!

(Re: ProtonVPN's response) -- I've used NordVPN and Surfshark in the past and I lever lost my language choice. Neither one changed nor corrupted my browser language as ProtonVPN does. Both are linguistically "transparent to the user". If ProtonVPN thinks loss of legibility is "proof" it is working and that illegible browser output that cannot be restored--even when their VPN service is turned off-- is a good trade-off, they're naively mistaken. Proton VPN's algorithm of an arbitrary node selection with hopes that one gets the right language "brass ring" on Proton's node merry-go-round leaves no choice but to give up their VPN protection. Proton could offer users a language preference option, but that seems outside their wherewithal, unlike other VPN providers.

Of course, Proton offers the choice of a paid "upgrade" to solve the loss of language problem. My "test drive" of free Proton VPN shows that it cannot ensure language autonymy; why would I pay to risk more poor performance?

(Again a 2/20/26 update, solicited by Proton:) Nothing new, better or improved. Same language corruption, same poor choices of 10 (Proton's lead-in still says "5") lands in their "take what you get and shut up!" node lottery in the brass ring grab that corrupts your set language --"proof that it's working...", says Proton. Oh, but you can opt for another bad choice by simply selecting "Change..." and waiting up to 10 minutes for another--likely poor--choice and hope it speaks your language. All this could be lessened if not done away with by allowing us freeloaders (who'd pay for this kind of performance and service?) to specify a language preference on signing up. Nope. Too complicated for Proton's team to implement.

So from me, still one star.

Randomly connecting to a server? I get that it's free but at least let the users choose which countries they want to connect to among the limited numbers.

Works well, when it does. After using the extension for little over a few weeks, it randomly stopped actually changing my location/IP even though it says "Connected". Huge security risk, If this does happen to you, I would try disallowing and reallowing the browser to control your browser traffic, but this is a massive and unnecessary inconvenience.

Honestly the worst extension I've ever used. Idk, maybe all vpn extensions are garbage, but holy hell this is garbage. Are they even trying? Will constantly crash in such a way that you have to completely disable it to use your browser in any way shape or form, and completely uninstall it and then reinstall it to get it to work again. Sometimes even after disabling and re-enabling it, it'll still stop working a minute later.

And don't misunderstand me. By constantly, I mean literally every time you use it after your computer has slept. Honestly, at this point I'm giving up, uninstalling it, and reporting it to mozilla, for breaking the browser.

And don't give me the "That doesn't sound right, can you share more details" bull, there are literally a hundred reviews saying the exact same thing. Try using your own product and figuring it out on your own.
